Sayantan and Maria win U-19 Chess C'ship

chess pictureLucknow: Sayantan Das of West Bengal and Goa’s Ivana Maria Furtado proved their supremacy, winning the title of the Dr. K.L. Garg Memorial National Junior U-19 Chess Championship-2013 at Bora Institute of Management Sciences here on Thursday. Sayantan accumulated a total 9.5 points and Ivana Maria Furtado has collected total 9 points from 11 rounds.


In the final 11th round 4th seed FM Sayantan Das settled for a draw with his opponent Kerala’s 2nd seed Sunilduth Lyna Narayanan. While, 6th seed and Woman International Master Ivana settled for draw with 8th seed and Women FIDE Master Monnisha GK of Tamilnadu.

Among the girls, Maharashtra’s 2nd seed and Women FIDE Master Rucha Pujari was first runner-up with 9 points, defeating 7th seed and Women FIDE Master Mahalakshmi M of Tamilnadu in the final round. Michelle Catherina P of Tamilnadu was second runner-up with 8.5 points. 5th seed Michelle beat her opponent 12th seed Madhurima Shekhar of Delhi.


On the other hand Tamilnadu’s 5th seed and FIDE Master Aravindh Chithambaram Vr was first runner-up with 9 points in the open section. Aravindh defeated 12th seed K. Praneeth Surya of Andhra Pradesh in the final round. 3rd seed International Master Prasanna Raghuram Rao of Maharashtra was second runner-up of the championship. Prasanna beat 11th seed CM Prince Bajaj of Delhi and collected total 8 points.

Champion Sayantan Das said, “I am really excited with my victory. I feel good.” After achieve the championship title, an elated Ivana Maria said, “today, i am so happy after achieve this title.”

At the concluding ceremony, Chief Guest Dr. Neeraj Bora, Vice President, UP Chess Sports Association and Guest of Owner Tarun Kumar Dixit, Director Eldeco congratulated the winners and awarded them prize worth Rs. 2,00,000/- other officials present were AK Raizada, Secretary UP Chess Sports Association, Sayeed Ahmad, Lucknow Chess centre and Dharmendra kumar international arbiter.
