Ajay Maken distributes cash awards to sportspersons

New Delhi: Ajay Maken, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs & Sports   distributed the cash awards of Rs 7.71 crore to 130 sportspersons and 132 coaches at a function on Monday.

The Sports Ministry has sanctioned cash awards worth Rs.2.08 crore to 130 sportspersons, who won medals in international sports events during 2009-10 and 2010-11 in the disciplines athletics, billiards & snooker, wrestling, chess, shooting, boxing, rowing, swimming, squash rackets, judo, weightlifting, yachting and para asian games.  The Ministry has also sanctioned cash awards worth Rs. 5.63 crore to 132 coaches, who have imparted coaching to sportspersons who have won medals in Commonwealth Games 2010 and Asian Games 2010.

While addressing at the function, Ajay Maken congratulated all the sportspersons and coaches for their extra-ordinary achievements. Maken announced that the scheme under which cash awards are being given to sportspersons and coaches will be revisited to cut down the delays caused in the distribution of these cash incentives/awards. He further stated that efforts will be also made to give cash incentive equally those coaches also, who trained the sportspersons in the initial phase of their career.  

167 sportspersons who won medals in CWG 2010 and 156 sportspersons who won medals in Asian Games 2010 have already been given cash awards worth Rs. 26.82 crore in November-December 2010.

During the last two financial years i.e. 2010-11 and 2012-12 ( till date), cash awards worth 43.15 crore have been given to 1048 sportspersons and coaches from the Scheme of Special Awards for winners of medals in international events and their coaches.
