Fenesta Open: Karan, Simran are U-16 champs

New Delhi: Karan Salwan of Delhi was crowned champion in the under-16 boys’ singles, while Delhi girl Simran Kaur Sethi lifted the under-16 girls’ singles title at the Fenesta Open Tennis Championship for Juniors here on Saturday.

The day certainly belonged to two Delhi players who stole the show with authoritative performances, winning their respective finals in straight sets.
While Karan, who lost the very first game of the match, came back strongly to beat second seeded Fatehdeep Singh 7-6(5), 6-4, Simran overpowered her Delhi compatriot Tarannum Handa 7-5, 6-0 at the RK Khanna Tennis Complex.
Andhra girl Pranjala Yadlapalli benefited from an ankle injury to Nayanika Reddy and won the under-14 girls single final 7-6(5), 6-4 while Dhruv Pal lifted the title in the boys’ category with 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 win over top seed Sachin Kumar.
In the last match of the day, Karan was pushed on the back foot right at the start as Fatehdeep surged to a 4-2 lead before the Delhi lad got his acts together and staged a solid fight back with some powerful stroke play from the baseline.
Karan broke Punjab’s Fatehdeep in the eighth game to negate the lead and from there on the two held on to their serves before Karan took the tie-breaker 7-5. Karan then broke Fatehdeep early in the second set and held on to the lead before winning the two-hour contest.
