New Delhi: Second seed Fatehdeep Singh and Karan Salwan will slug it out for the under-16 boys singles’ title, while in the girls section, two Delhi players -- Simran Kaur Sethi and Tarranum Handa – will battle it out in the summit clash of the Fenesta Open National Tennis Championship here on Saturday.
Fatehdeep thwarted a second set comeback from Jude Raymond before the Punjab lad won the match against third seed 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 in their under-16 boys singles’ semi-final match, while Karan handed a straight-set defeat to Deepak Vishwakarma (6-2, 6-2) on Friday.
In the first semi-final of under-16 girls singles, Delhi girl Simran’s strong baseline game kept 12th seed Teertha Iska on her toes as she smashed her way into the final with a 6-2, 6-4 win.In the other semi-final, Nayanika Reddy’s sore ankle did not allow her to go all out against 10th seed Tarranum as the Delhi girl came out victorious 6-3, 6-2.
Simran dominated the proceedings right through the match and capitalized on the two breakpoints she got against Teertha in the last game of the match to seal the issue in her favour.Nayanika, who ousted top seed Snehadevi Reddy on Thursday, couldn’t take her impressive campaign ahead and her ankle, which kept trouble her throughout the match, did not help her cause either. While she did try to fight back on a few occasions in the first set, the second set was a complete failure for her as Tarranum did not give her an inch of space to make a comeback.
In the under-14 boys’ singles, top seed Sachin Kumar thrashed BR Nikshep 6-1, 6-3 to set up a title clash with Dhruv Pal who had to fight hard against Vishu Prasad before winning the contest 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.
However, it wasn’t such a bad day for Nayanika as she will get her opportunity to fight for the under-14 girls title when she takes on Pranjala Yadlapalli in the final. Nayanika defeated Vanshika Sawhney 6-1, 6-2, while Pranjala overcame a stiff challenge from Akshara Iska to win the semi-final match 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.
