Root, Anderson help Eng take first innings lead; India 167/3

james-andersonNottingham: A record 10th wicket partnership (198) between Joe Root and James Anderson helped England take 39-run lead in the first Test against India at Trent Bridge here on Saturday.


In reply, India were 167 for three at the close of the day’s play.


Murali Vijay (52), who made a century in the first innings, and Cheteshwar Pujara (55) both fell in the last hour and the visitors were 128 runs ahead in the match which is heading for a draw. Virat Kohli (8) and Ajinkya Rahane (18) were at the crease when stumps were drawn.


For England, spinner Moeen Ali took two wickets, while paceman Liam Plunkett scalped one.


Earlier, Vijay and Pujara added 91 runs for the second wicket until Pujara was caught by Ben Stokes off a Plunkett’s delivery at point.


However, the day belonged to Root and Anderson, who produced the best score by an England number 11. England began the day on 352 for nine. Root played a gem of an innings as he registered his fourth Test century to rescue his team after they had collapsed to 202 for seven on Friday. Anderson too scored his career-best score until he edged the ball to Dhawan at first slip off Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who returned test-best figures of five for 82.
