2nd Test: Rahane’s century helps India reach 290/9 against Eng at Lord’s

Ajinkya-Rahane-test-2London: Timely century (103) from Ajinkya Rahane rescued India from a precarious situation on the opening day of the second Test against Engalnd at Lord’s as he visitors who were reduced to 145 for seven early in the final session, managed to end their day on 290 for nine here on Tursday.

Rahane along with number nine Bhuvneshwar Kumar (36) added 90 runs for the eighth wicket and later Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami frustrated the England bowlers and took India to 290 for nine at the close.

Electing to bowl after winning the toss, England started off well on a bowler-fri Murali Vijay cheaply. However, they failed to take advantage as India negotiated through the first session without any further damage. But a four-wicket burst in the middle session followed by another dismissal shortly after tea put England in control before Rahane took charge.

Rahane's knock, which included 15 fours and a six, was ended by a sharp caught-and-bowled effort by James Anderson late in the day.

Tail-enders Ishant Sharma (12) and Mohammed Shami (14) played sensibly in the closing overs and ensured England will have to come out and bowl on Friday morning.
