Rohit, Ashwin and Shami steer India to huge win against West Indies

00 ashwinKolkata: After Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin had put India in driver's seat with their stupendous centuries, Mohammed Shami wreaked havoc on the West Indies batsmen as the Bengal pacer came up with a brilliant performance, taking 5/47 in the second innings, that helped India win the first Test by an innings and 51 runs at Eden Gardens here on Friday.

Earlier, Ravichandran Ashwin cracked his second Test century and later chipped in with three wickets as India bundled out the West Indies for 168 in the second innings to clinch the match with two days to spare. Rohit Sharma, too, made his Test debut special, cracking a magnificent 177.

However, it was Shami who was the star of the day as he claimed 5/47 in the second innings and returned with an impressive match figures of 9 for 118 at the Eden Gardens. With this, the Shami, who play for Bengal in Ranji, also entered the record books as he joined Ashwin on second spot among Indians in best debut bowling numbers.

Earlier resuming the day at 354/6, India lost their last four wickets within hundred runs as Sharma missed out on a double century on debut by 23 runs while Ashwin slammed his second Test ton in a record 280-run stand for the seventh wicket. India extended their lead to 219 runs before being bowled out for 453.

Starting their second innings on a back-foot, West Indies batsmen didn't do justice to their talent as they were bundled out for just 168, with Shami taking 5/47 while Ashwin finished with a figure of (3/46).

It was India's fifth Test victory in a row after their 4-0 rout of Australia as the victory also snapped the West Indies' six-match winning streak.
