Federer, Ferrer make it to US Open third roundNew York: Roger Federer got the better of Argentine Carlos Berlocq 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 to cruise into the US Open third round here on Thursday.
 

Federer, the No. 7 seed and 2004-08 champion, hit 37 winners and converted seven of his 13 break points opportunities for victory in one hour and 35 minutes. He will next play Adrian Mannarino, who fought past home favourite Sam Querrey 7-6(4), 7-5(5), 6-7(5), 6-4 in three hours and 20 minutes.
 

Meanwhile, fourth seed David Ferrer recorded his 25th match win at Flushing Meadows when he defeated fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-2 for a place in the US Open third round.He will now play against qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin, who is through to the third round for the first time after a 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 win over Andreas Haider-Maurer.
 

Eighth seed Richard Gasquet recovered from a slow start to beat qualifier and fellow Frenchman Stephane Robert 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 and will jow play No. 32 seed Dmitry Tursunov, who was leading Guillaume Rufin 7-6(4), 1-1 when his opponent retired due to a right groin strain.
 

Meanwhile, Janko Tipsarevic overcame Dudi Sela 6-4, 6-4, 6-1. The No. 18 seed will next face qualifier Jack Sock who got the better of qualifier Maximo Gonzalez 7-6(3), 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 to reach the third round in successive years.
