US Open: Pennetta, Vinci, Hantuchova in quarter-finalNew York: Flavia Pennetta defeated Simona Halep of Romania by 6-2, 7-6 in a rain-interrupted match to make it to the quarter-finals of US Open here on Monday.

This was the fourth encounter between the two and interestingly Pennetta has never dropped a set against her Romanian opponent. She will next face her compatriot Roberta Vinci, who managed to ease past Camila Giorgi by 6-4, 6-2 in another round of 16 match of the evening. This is going to be the fourth time that World Number 83 will be playing her US Open quarter-final.

Vinci to take on Pennetta in quarters

Roberta Vinci knocked off Camila Giorgi, out of the US Open as she won the match in straight sets by 6-4, 6-2 to make her way to the quarter-finals of the last grand slam of the season. Giorgi enjoyed her terrific run in which she also pulled out an upset when she overpowered No. 6 seed Caroline Wozniacki on Saturday night.

Vinci committed just nine unforced errors in comparison to 35 errors by Giorgi. Vinci wasn’t coming too hard on her compatriot but her smart play was good enough to take her to this sweet victory. Vinci struck just 12 winners as she cruised away in the first set by winning five games in a row.
