ATP 500 Citi Open: Bopanna-Begemann reach quarters

rohan bopannaWashington: Thursday was more of a mixed bag for Indian fans, as after Somdev Devvarman’s departure from Washington Open it was Rohan Bopanna who brought the smile back as he along with Andre Begemann of Germany overpowered the number one seeded pair of Alxendra Peya and Bruno Soares to enter the next round.

Bopanna, who was playing with his eighth partner of the season, will now take on Treat Huey of Philippines and Briton Dominic Inglot in the quarter-finals of the USD 1,295,790 hard court event.

It was a close contest for Bopanna and Begemann as the match went into the tie-breaker. They started off well as they breezed through the opening set by 6-2. But the number No. 1 seeded pair made a great comeback to clinch the second set in a tie breaker by 7-6(4).

With both the pairs fighting hard to advance through the next round, it was a treat to watch. But it was Bopanna and Begemann who had a last laugh as they managed to win the match tie-breaker. Their brilliant efforts were quite clearly displayed in the number of points they won which were as high as 77 in comparisons to the top seeded pair who had 58.

Meanwhile, it wasn’t a happy outing for Somdev Devvarman as he lost his second round match of Citi Open by 5-7 5-7 to John Isner.
