Rain plays spoilsport as third Ashes Test ends in a draw

clarke-latestManchester: Rain played spoilsport to Australia's chances of winning the third Test of The Ashes as the match ended in draw on a rain-shortened final day at Old Trafford, Manchester on Monday.

The result not only keeps England 2-0 ahead in the five-game contest but would also help them in retaining the Ashes, the third straight time.

England ended on 37-3 on Monday, with play washed out from just after lunch. The host made 368 in its first innings. Australia scored 527-7 declared in the first innings and declared 172-7 in the second.

England won the first two Tests, at Nottingham and Lord’s in London. The fourth game starts on August 9 at Chester-le-Street, and the fifth at the Oval in London from August 21.

Australia captain Michael Clarke was named man of the match after scoring 187 in the first innings.
