Wimbledon: Sharapova, Ivanovic stunned in 2nd Rd

sharapova-paris 300London: In a day of upsets, first it was Ana Ivanovic and then Maria Sharapova who were shown the exit door on day three of The Championships at All England Club here on Wednesday. Apart from these, injuries too took its toll as it forced seven players, including Victoria Azarenka to withdraw from the tournament.

Ana Ivanovic, semi-finalist of 2007 Wimbledon, lost her second round match to Canada's Eugenie Bouchard, who was making her main draw debut at Wimbledon.

It turned to be quite an easy task for 19-year-old Canadian as she went on to beat the Former World number one in straight sets by 6-3, 6-3 in just 63 minutes.

Bouchard, the world number 66, will now take on 19th seed Spaniard, Carla Suarez Navarro in the third round.

Later on the day, 131st ranked qualifier Michelle Larcher de Brito stunned Maria Sharapova in straight sets. Third-seeded Sharapova lost 6-3, 6-4 to Portuguese in her second round match at the All England Club.

It's the second significant upset of the tournament, which is only in Day 3. Two-time men's champion Rafael Nadal was beaten on Monday by 135th-ranked Steve Darcis.

The Russian didn’t found the court good as she slipped quite a number of times before she received medical treatment from the trainer in the second set.

Adding to the woes of the tennis fans was the withdrawal of Victoria Azarenka which came just before her match on Centre Court on Wednesday. It was because of the knee injury she suffered in her first round win over Maria Joao Koehler.

Azarenka had been due to play Italy's Flavia Pennetta first up on Centre Court for a place in the third round
