Janowicz and Kubot make it to Wimbledon quarterfinals

Jerzy JanovicLondon: Tennis history was made at The Championships on Monday when two Poles – Jerzy Janowicz and Lukasz Kubot – reached the quarter-finals.

Janowicz, the No. 24 seed, kept his emotions in check after losing the first set to strike accurate serves and out-fight Jurgen Melzer in baseline rallies for a 3-6, 7-6(1), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory on Court No. 12.

Poland’s last male quarter-finalist at the All England Club was Wojtek Fibak in 1980.

Incredibly, Janowicz will play Kubot on Wednesday thereby guaranteeing a first male Grand Slam semi-finalist.

31 year old Kubot proved that serve and volley tennis can still be effective in a 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over left-hander Adrian Mannarino, who celebrated his 25th birthday two days ago.
