England beat NZ to reach Champions Trophy semi-finals

Alastair CookCardiff: Kane Williamson (67) nearly pulled off the match for New Zealand but James Anderson (3-32) and Ravi Bopara (2-26) bowled brilliantly to save England the blushes as the hosts beat the Kiwis by 10 runs to reach the semi-finals of ICC Champions Trophy here on Sunday.


Earlier it was fine batting display from Alastair Cook (64) abd Joe Root (38) that helped England reach 169 in 23.3 overs in a match reduced to 24 overs each side due to rain.

For New Zealand Kyle Mills took 4-30 while Mitchell McClenaghan ended up with the figures of 3-36.


Chasing the target, New Zealand could only reach 159-8 in its 24 overs, with Kane Williamson hitting 67 and Corey Anderson 30.


Alstair Cook was lucky enough to be dropped three times and went on to make 64 before being finally caught by Nathan McCullum off his own bowling. Later, Eoin Morgan (15) and Jos Buttler (14) added valuable runs to the total.

Williamson was the only Kiwi batsman to resist the England bowling and hit 67 off 54 balls, including eight boundaries and one six.
