New Delhi: Teen shuttler P V Sindhu became the lone Indian women shuttler to qualify for the semifinals of the Yonex Sunrise India Open 2013 after beating Yui Hashimoto of Japan here today at the DDA Badminton Stadium, Siri Fort.
Playing in front of the near capacity crowd, eight seeded Sindhu won the match 21-16, 21-16 in 47 minutes to make it to the semifinals of the Indian leg of the BWF OSIM World Super Series for the first time in her career.
The Hyderabadi player started on an attacking note and opened a huge gap but the Japanese got back into the match and won nine points on the trot to make it 17-19, but Sindhu held on to her nerve to win the game.
In the second game it was close fight, but the 19 year old Indian eventually ran home much to the delight of the home crowd.
She will now take on world No.6 Ratnachok Intanon of Thailand who beat Arundhati Panthawane 14-21 21-7 21-16 of India in her next match, while second seeded Juliane Schenk of Germany beat Yeon Ju Bae, seeded fifth of Korea 21-17 21-13 to set up last four clash with Aprilla Yuswandari of Indonesia who thrashed Nichaon Jindapon of Thailand 18-21 21-16 21-18.
In the men’s singles veteran Anand Pawar stood against all odds to beat his young compatriot Ajay Jayaram 21-16, 21-16 in 30 minutes to cruise into the semis of the tournament.
In the other men’s quarterfinals world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia beat India’s Prannoy H. S. 21-14 21-19.
