Melbourne: India dream run at the Champions Trophy was halted by the hosts Australia as they crashed out of the championship race with a 0-3 defeat here today.
India will now take on their arch-rivals Pakistan for the bronze medal match, while Netherlands will take on Australia in the finals.
It proved a totally lop-sided affair as the injury ravaged India proved no match for Australia.
Australia opened the scoring in as early fifth through their skipper Jamie Dywer. The Australian veteran then doubled the lead for his team in the 18th minute. Keiran Govers piled up on the India’s misery in the 42nd minute.
This is the first time since 2004 that they have earned a chance to finish with a medal. India have not won a medal since 1982, when they won a bronze and for three years in a row from 2002-04, they were pipped by arch-enemy Pakistan for the third place.
