Duleep Trophy: South hit back after conceding lead

vinay-kumarVisakhapatnam: South Zone after conceding a 23 run lead in the first innings reduced East Zone to 126-5 in their second essay here on Tuesday.

Earlier South started the day at 134-5 trailing by 133 runs lost their first wicket of day of day in third over. With just four wickets remaining it looked like East would at least take a 100 run first innings lead.

But then skipper Vinay Kumar along with Amit Verma started the damage control. Both the players stitched a 97 run partnership to help the team to 244.

While Verma was happy playing the role of an anchor, Vinay started scoring at a brisk rate.

Vinay scored 61 off 117 balls including seven fours and Verma scored 49 off 132 balls including five fours and a six.

Biplab Samantray was the pick of the bowlers for East with three wickets.

Coming out to bat again, East could never get going against Vinay and Co and lost wickets at a flurry.

Nataraj Behera (60, 148m, 113b, 8x4) was the only batsmen who could take the challenge to South’s bowlers.

Brief scores: East Zone 267 all out and 129 for six (Natraj Behera 60; Stuart Binny 2/25). South Zone: 244 all out (R Vinay Kumar 61; Biplob Samantray 3/41).
