Visakhapatnam: A brilliant 145 from Saurabh Tiwary and some impressive bowling from Biplab Samantray helped East Zone dominate proceedings over South Zone on the second day of the four-day Duleep Trophy semifinal match played at Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium.
South Zone were reeling at 66/6 after being put in to bat but Tiwary and Basant Mohanty (58) batted superbly to get their team out of an embarrassing position. South Zone started the second day at the score of 187/6 and lost Mohanty early in the first session.
Tiwary who was unbeaten on 84 played cautiously in the beginning and completed his hundred. He played more shots after crossing the three figure barrier and took the East Zone score past 250. He kept losing partners at the other end and his was the last wicket to fell.
South Zone in reply, got off to a good start. Abhinav Mukund played cautiously and Robin Uthappa played the way he knows, Uthappa played some crunchy drives and made a quick 40 before getting out to Samantray. Uthappa’s wicket hurt South Zone as they kept losing wickets after that. Samantray was the pick of the bowlers picking up three crucial wickets.
South Zone were 133 runs behind when the day was called off.
