Wrestler Babita wins bronze in World Championship

BabitaNew Delhi: Babita Kumari became only the second female wrestler after Alka Tomar to bag a bronze medal at the World Senior Female Wrestling Championship when the Haryana wrestler won the medal in 51-kg. weight category at the event being held at Edmonton, Canada from September 26 to 29.

In the semi-qualification round, Babita defeated Hsin-Ju Chiu from Chinese Taipei and in qualification round she defeated Japanese Wrestler Risako Kawai.


In the semi-final, Babita lost to local girl Jessica Anne Marrie Macdonald Bondy after which she entered the repechage where she won the bronze.


Besides Babita (22), and her elder sister Geeta (23) too is a top national level wrestler having done India proud buy winning gold in the 55 Kg category at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. Babita had won silver in the 51 Kg category in Delhi.


The Haryana-based sisters train under their father Mahabir Singh, who was a student of legendary pehelwaan Chandgi Ram.
