Paes-Verdasco reach second round of US Open

leanderpaesNew York: India’s Leander Paes and his partner Fernando Verdasco got the better of the German pairing of Florian Mayer and Frank Moser 6-2, 6-3 in 62 minutes to reach the second round of US Open on Thursday.

Paes and Verdasco saved all three break points they faced to set up a second round clash with Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey, who took out the top seeded Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan on Wednesday.



Meanwhile, Colin Fleming and Treat Huey upset Italian fifth seeds Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini 6-1, 6-7(3), 7-6(6) in 1 hour and 57 minutes.

Philipp Oswald and Adil Shamasdin upset 10th seeds Alexander Peya and Bruno Soares 6-3, 6-3 in 1 hour and 11 minutes. They next face Marcus Daniell and Jonathan Marray who survived a challenge from wild cards Taylor Harry Fritz and Reilly Opelka.

In another match, Eric Butorac and Scott Lipsky ousted 16th seeds Feliciano Lopez and Max Mirnyi 7-6(4), 7-5 in 1 hour and 23 minutes. They will next meet Gilles Muller and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi.
