Swiss Open: Daniel Brands loses to Hanescu

Daniel BrandsGstaad: Daniel Brands dream week came to an end after he suffered defeat at the hands of former Swiss Open champion Victor Hanescu by 3-6, 4-6 here on Friday. Hanescu, ranked 54th, won his tenth match at Gstaad, in 70 minutes. With this victory, Victor makes his way to the semi-finals.

Intensity during semi-finals is not expected to be as high as it would have been because of the absence of 17-time Grand Slam Champion Roger Federer, who was ousted by Daniel Brands in the second round.

The competition, on the high-altitude clay of Gstaad, got bit tougher for Brands when he came face to face with the 2008 champion Hanescu. Hanescu didn’t offer him much off a chance and he finished up with five aces and a break of serve per set.

He next takes on sixth seed Mikhail Youzhny who overcame fourth-seeded tournament debutant Juan Monaco 5-7 6-4 7-6 (9-7).

Monaco was playing his sixth quarter-final of the season, but was unable to stop Youzhny from reaching his second Gstaad semi-final in three years.
