India retain place in Asia Oceania Group I

leanderpaesBangalore: After Somdev Devvarman and Yuki Bhambri had given India a 2-0 lead by winning their respective singles matches against Indonesia on Friday, veteran Leander Paes, playing his 50th Davis Cup match, along with Sanam Singh won the doubles rubber against David Agung Susant and Elbert Sie as India retained their place in Asia Oceania Group I by taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in the Davis Cup relegation play-off tie, here on Saturday.


Paes and Sanam dominating the proceeding and won the match in straight sets 6-2 6-1 6-4 in 90 minutes. With the win, India also kept their slate clean of not losing against Indonesia as hosts.


Paes, who was playing for the first time young Sanam, proved too strong for their rivals and won the first set in easily and David and Elbert twice in the second set to make it 2-0. However a two-set lead made the Indians looked a bit complacent and the duo committed many unforced errors but finally won the game 6-4.
