Thrissur: On a day when records stayed away from the Aquatics Complex swimming pool, T.R. Rahul and S.R. Akhila hogged the limelight, winning three golds each, as the 59th State senior aquatics championship opened here on Saturday.

Rahul struck gold in the men's 200m freestyle, 1500m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle relay, while Akhila's exploits came in the women's 800m freestyle, 400m individual medley and 4x200m freestyle relay.

For the overall championship, Thiruvananthapuram was leading with 237 points, way ahead of host Thrissur (107) and Ernakulam (87).
