Members of 'Driving Iron', the band started by pro golfers.
Every mortal soul present on this mother planet has a pool of qualities. It is for every individual to zero in on their primary talent and use it to the optimal level to excel in their life, while other qualities remain and compliment it. While one remains a mode of earning bread, the other qualities remain as a way to break free from stress and the infuriating heaviness of daily life.
Well such is the story of pro Indian golfers Sujjan Singh and Gurbaaz Mann. Singh is a golfer based out of Kapurthala and is presently second on the Asian Tour Order of Merit List. But behind the golfing lines, he has a musical band by the name of “Driving Iron.” His band mates include vocalists Gurbaaz Mann, another pro Indian Golfer who is also on the rhythm guitar, Akal Suj Rana, on the lead guitar and Sujjan on the drums. They are occasionally joined by one of their good friend Siddharth on bass guitar. The band came into existence four years ago, but the progress is really slow as the band mates remain held up with their job commitments.
Members of 'Drivng Iron'The band which is inclined towards old classic and blues, compose their own songs. Their genre of music is very fascinating as they compose their own version of classic rock infused with a tinge of folk music into it. All the members of the band, who otherwise are very successful in their respective fields, joined hands only because of their love and passion for music. “The band which we formed is totally out of love and passion for music. See playing golf is our profession. But music is our passion and hobby. It is something which helps us release pressure and vent out our stress. It is totally different from golf and is also very easy if you are dedicated. It is an avenue to showcase our creative side,” said Sujjan.
The band is against the whole idea of covering other bands. They do not see any reason why a band comes out with a cover. The originality of the band is lost if they start playing cover. “Coming out with own composition is so much fun. One can do their own stuff,” added Sujjan.
The band, which has an unnamed album to be released, feels that they not inspired by mainstream. Whatever they do is because of their love for music. “Our band is a kind of band where all the members have other priorities. And top of that of that we are not someone who wants to make our album the bestselling album or to top the billboards. We do it amongst ourselves and happy with it,” said the vocalist Gurbaaz.
Well one more thing which they feel is hindering their progress is lack of funds. For a band to go for live gigs and release an album lot of money is required. “Fund constraint has been a problem with us ever since the band was incepted. A lot of money is required to release an album. We need to upgrade our instruments, buy processors and lot more and we are no cricketer. And I travel a lot and each tour costs me around a lakh,” said Sujjan.
“We record in a studio called Quarter note in Malviya Nagar. But that is not all that is required for a band to flourish. We require a lot of money. Even we do need to dedicate a lot of time to our band. It hardly we meet” added Gurbaaz.
