Srinivasan can fight BCCI elections but can't take charge, rules SC

New Delhi: N Srinivasan's aspirations of being re-elected as BCCI president took a severe blow as Spureme Court of India on Friday, though allowing Srinivasan to contest the elections, asked him not to take charge even if he is elected until the case pertaining to his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan, who has been charge sheeted in connection with the IPL spot- fixing case, was in the court.

"In case Srinivasan is elected as President, he will not take charge until further orders," a bench comprising Justices A K Patnaik and J S Kehar said, hearing a plea by the Cricket Association of Bihar, which sought to stop Srinivasan from contesting.

The bench took strong exception to Srinivasan still holding charge of BCCI when his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan has been charge sheeted in connection with the IPL spot- fixing case. The decision came as another setback for Srinivasan, who had to step aside after former Chennai Super King's chief and his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan's name cropped up in the IPL betting scandal.

As per the court order, Srinivasan cannot discharge the Board President's duties even if he is re-elected on Sunday which means the Board will not have any functional head.

The 68-year-old Srinivasan is through with the regular two-year term and is eyeing an extended one-year tenure.
However, adamant Srinivasan seemed unpurturbed by the SC order and said he will contest the elections in the Annual General Meeting in Chennai on Sunday.

Srinivasan said the court has not made a single observation which should stop him from seeking an extended one-year term as Board President at the end of his regular two-year tenure. "Nobody has stopped me from contesting elections and attending the AGM. Before taking my comments, kindly go through the observations made by the honourable Supreme Court. It states clearly that I have not been stopped from attending the AGM and I am also going to contest the election, why shall I not contest the elections?" fumed the 68-year-old Tamil Nadu strongman,” he said.
