Anand signs truce with Aronian, Carlsen draws with Topalov

New Delhi: The Blitz effect was evident in World Champion Viswanathan Anand’s verus Levon Aronian’s game as the players swiftly belted out the moves, de-cluttered the chessboard and signed truce in the first round of the Norway Super Chess tournament.

In fact both the high profile games ended in draws with Norway’s Magnus Carlsen also sharing the point with former World Champion Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria, late Wednesday night.

However Whites dominated proceedings in other games with Peter Svidler, Hikaru Nakamura and Sergey Karjakin posting victories over John Ludvig Hammer, Wang Hao and Teimour Radjabov respectively.

Anand opened with the King Pawn against Aronian from Armenia and pretty soon the players preferred to tread an offbeat path in the Spanish Opening which is one of the most analyzed Openings in Chess.

The encounter was more like a cat and mouse game where pieces kept flying off the board at regular intervals and each player preferred to wait and watch, hoping for an error from the opponent.

However the exchange of pieces soon steered the game towards a rook and pawn ending, giving an indication that the point would be split. On move 33 the players settled for a draw by perpetual checks when no headway appeared possible for either.

Carlsen and Topalov also reached a deadlock in a symmetrical English game but Carlsen pressed for a long time and settled for a draw on the 51st turn in a knight and pawn ending.

The ten player Round Robin shifts venue for the second round to Sandnes. Interestingly the nine rounds are spread across four venues which are at a distance of about 18 to 20 kms from each other.

The tussle between Carlsen and Anand is scheduled late Thursday night and is the most interesting one as it pitches the King versus whom many call the ‘Prince in waiting. ’ Since these two will clash for the World title at Chennai this November, their first encounter after Carlsen became the Challenger tonight will be the most watched one.
