Mumbai: Despite an unimpressive record, Duncan Fletcher has got one year extension as the Indian cricket coach. The decision on extending his tenure was taken by the working committee of BCCI in Mumbai on Friday.
According to reports, Fletcher’s contract has been extended, keeping in mind the South-Africa tour later this year.
However, it must be mentioned here that India had failed miserably on tours of England and Australia during his tenure as they were white-washed on both the tours in the Test series. To make his record even worse, India lost to England in the home series after 28 years. The only away Test win during his tenure has been the one against West Indies nearly two years back just after Fletcher had taken charge. Under Fletcher, India have lost 10 out of the 22 Test matches, having won only eight.
In the 44 ODI matches that India have played under Fletcher after winning the World Cup, the 'Men in Blue' have won 25 matches losing 16. In T20s, India won nine of the 17 matches losing the other eight.
The biggest failure came in, when India failed to qualify for finals of Asia Cup and couldn’t even make it to the semis of 2012 T20 World Cup.
Meanwhile Sunil Gavaskar, while talking to NDTV, raised question on Fletcher’s extension saying if an Indian coach would have been spared the axe in these circumstances, “If Indian coach would have that kind of record, then by this time he would have been sacked by the BCCI. There is no point in talking about why he was retained because Working Committee had already taken the decision and we should look forward to it rather than complaining about it,” said the Little Master.
