Australia thrash West Indies by nine wickets

Perth: The decision to bat first didn’t go well for West Indies as the visitors succumbed to the bowling of Mitchel Starc who made full use of the bouncy wicket of WACA and nailed them hard by picking up wickets at regular intervals. He took five wickets for 20 runs and made sure the oppositions were done and dusted with in 24 overs for a paltry 70 runs. And later Maxwell played an aggressive innings of 51 runs to ensure a nine-wicket win for the hosts.

Mitchel Starc simply ran through the middle order of West Indies by picking up wickets of Ramnaresh Sarwan, Dwayne Bravo and Keiron Pollard without allowing them to get off the mark and made sure that they don’t get 100 runs on the board.

Chris Gayle and Powell too struggled a lot in front of new ball bowlers Mitchell Starc and McKay. Chris Gayle departed first at the score of 14 and then after adding four more runs to the team’s total, Powell was also back into the pavilion.

Darren Bravo, Kieran Powell and Darren Sammy were the only batsmen to reach a double figure mark. This was West Indies third lowest ODI score.

It was very much clear after a shaky start that West Indian were going to surrender sooner or later and it eventually happened when they were seven wickets down with just 39 runs on the board in 13 overs. However captain Darren Sammy resisted for a while and was the top scorer with 16 runs.

Clint McKay, who bowled really well in tandem with Starc in his first spell, picked up three wickets and debutant James Faulkner too did good job by clinching two wickets.

But for Australia, the match was still on and they started in grand style. Maxwell took the batting crease and smashed Kemar Roach for 18 runs which included three fours and one six  in the first over of the innings and when Roach came in to bowl his second over, Maxwell again hit him for a four and a six.

Maxwell played an aggressive innings of 51 runs in which smashed nine fours and two sixes and made sure Australia don’t face much hick-ups in their chase.
