Kolkata: Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly’s father, Chandidas Ganguly, passed away on Thursday evening. Chandidas Ganguly, who was a role model for Sourav and whose other son Snehashis too was a first-class cricketer, passed away following a massive heart attack at his residence in Behala.
He was having tea with family members, including his wife and Sourav, when he complained of chest pain and slumped on the sofa and passed away minutes later.
He had already gone through the bypass surgery in London a few years ago and was even admitted to hospital because of lung infection during July 2012.
A huge crowd gathered at his place that included many sportspersons and administrators who came to pay their tribute to the unsung hero of Cricket Association of Bengal. Among the VVIPs was state chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
Chandidas himself was a club level cricketer and was quite popular. His journey started way back in the early seventies and he came a long way to become the ground secretary. He had served Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) as assistant-secretary, treasurer, secretary and vice-president of the then most powerful among BCCI's affiliated units. Then in July 2003, he became the chairman of the Cricket Association of Bengal.
