New Delhi: Shikhar Dhawan played a captain’s knock and steered Delhi to a six-wicket win over England XI in their warm-up match at Feroze Shah Kotla on Tuesday.
Chasing a daunting target of 295 runs for a win, Dhawan played a sensible 109-ball 110 knock and gave his team a solid start. Dhawan's knock laid the foundation for his team’s win but Unmukt Chand (37) yet again failed to build on a good start. Later youngster Milind Kumar (78 not out) in the company of veteran Rajat Bhatia (45 not out) took the team home with nine balls to spare. With this loss, England XI have lost both their practice games.
However, the visitors will take up some positives from the match as some of their top batsmen got into form and were among the run scoers. Ian Bell, who scored 91 in the previous practice against India A, followed it up with a century (110) and that would provide the visitors with a lot of confidence ahead of the ODI series that begins on Jan 11.
Electing to bat, England XI got off to a good start as Bel and captain Alastair Cook scored 0 runs for the opening stand. However after Cook, England lost a couple of quick wickets but Eoin Morgan (52 off 55 balls) and Bell combined well later to take the team to a good total. Later, Craig Kieswetter smashed 41 off 27 balls to take the score closer to the 300-run mark.
