IOA decides to go ahead with elections defying IOC's order

New Delhi: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has decided to go ahead with the elections process defying the International Olympic Committee (IOC) here today.

IOC on Tuesday had suspended the IOA after the latter failed to adhere to guidelines laid by the apex body. The world body was irked after IOA failed to pay any heed to the guidelines laid by the IOC and go ahead with the elections as per Government sports code norms.

The IOC president Jacques Rogge in a letter to V.K Malhotra, the acting president of IOA said that the body is faced with outside interference in applying its election rules, which threatens the IOA’s autonomy and the holding of free and fair elections in conformity with the IOA statutes and the Olympic Charter.

The IOA will now hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) today to decide the future course of action.

The IOC while placing the suspension had said that the IOA cannot hold elections until all pending issues are resolved and the Executive Board decides to lift the suspension on the Indian body.
