T20 World Cup: West Indies vs England: Hits and flops

In a high scoring Group 2 match West Indies beat defending champions England by 15 runs. West Indies is considered as one of the most dangerous sides in this tournament and proved the reason why.

West Indies in the match batted first and came up with a huge total. Their openers set the tone and some lusty hitting in the end took them to 179 runs. England in reply got off to a horrendous start losing two wickets in the first over.

After receiving early blows English batsmen played far too negatively in the middle overs and fell 15 runs shot despite some great hitting in the last seven overs.

Let’s have a look at some of the hits and flops of the match:

West Indies:

Hits:

Johnson Charles: Everybody was asking questions about his place in the side and Charles came up with an innings that will shut his critics for a long time. Charles started his innings slowly but caught the pace once he got his eyes in. He played right through the innings and scored 84. His innings included ten fours and three sixes.

Chris Gayle: Gayle is in ominous touch and he punished the English bowlers in the match. He did most of the scoring in the powerplays and got West Indies off to a flier. He scored his second fifty of the tournament, his innings included four massive sixes and six fours. He was very impressive with his off-spinners conceding only 27 runs.

Ravi Rampaul: He was the most successful West Indies bowler taking two wickets. Rampaul took both his wickets in the first over and that had a huge impact on the match.

Flops:

Sunil Narine: Narine is considered to be West Indies most potent weapon, but so far in the tournament he has failed to impress. Narine in this match failed to pick any wicket and gave away 33 runs in his four overs.

England:

Hits:

Eoin Morgan: Morgan came into bat in the 11th over and finished with 71 runs, that shows how good he was in the match. When he walked in to bat, England needed close to 13 runs an over, Morgan played a splendid knock and took his team close to the target. He scored at a strike rate close to 200 and hit five sixes in his innings.

Stuart Broad: Broad was the best bowler for his team, he bowled at fabulous line and changed his length consistently. He finished with two for 26 in his four overs.

Flops:

Jonny Bairstow: He came in to bat in the first over and played far too cautiously for his teams’ liking. Bairstow struggled to rotate the strike and consumed 29 deliveries for his 18 runs.

Craig Kieswetter: England team depends a lot on him to provide them a good start, but he failed yet again in the competition. Kieswetter lost his wicket trying to pull a deliverey.

Graeme Swann: He is the most successful English bowler in all the T20s and a lot was expected from him in this match. Swann however, bowled badly and conceded 32 runs in his three overs.
