Taylor’s fantastic fifty helps West Indies beat Australia to clinch ICC Women’s World T20 title

West Indies women win WCKolkata: A history was made at Eden Gardens on Sunday as West Indies women beat Australia in the finals of ICC Women’s World T20 2016. West Indies managed an easy win against the Aussies. They were quite well with their bat and ball in the final encounter. West Indies chased down the target of 149 in 19.3 overs with eight wickets in hand and bagged their maiden World T20 title.

West Indies captain Stefanie Taylor amazed the audience with a prolific performance as she scored 59 off 57 balls. Even Hayley Matthews was a show stopper of the final as she managed 66 from 45 balls.

The most interesting matter lies in the fact that West Indies women had never defeated Australia in any International T20I match. The final was the ninth meet between the two teams. All the earlier eight matches went to Australia’s side.

West Indies openers, Taylor and Matthews provided West Indies 120 runs as the first wicket partnership. The day did not favour the Australian bowlers. Australian bowlers didn’t get the chance to settle down and cast a spell with their ball.

Earlier, Australian women won the toss and chose to bat. They put up a target of 148 on the scoreboard. Both Elyse Villani and the skipper Meg Lanning added 52 runs in the scoreboard individually. But even that wasn’t a safe target for the Aussies. The game of cricket again proved to be unpredictable. In the penultimate over, Taylor was dismissed, leaving West Indies to get four off seven deliveries. Dottin and Britney Cooper then played fair enough to win it for West Indies.

Among the West Indies bowlers, Dottin got two wickets while Anisa Mohammed and Stafanie Taylor clinched one wicket each.
