35th PSPB inter-unit tennis tournament gets underway at RK Khanna Tennis Complex

New Delhi: The 35th PSPB Inter Unit Tennis Tournament witnessed some exciting action on its opening day at the RK Khanna Tennis Complex. Hosted by Engineers India Limited, the first day saw the Team Championships being played in the Men, Women and the Veterans categories.

After a crisp opening ceremony, the tournament was inaugurated by Ms Veena Swarup Director HR, Engineers India Limited when she played the inauguration game of the tournament with Yuki Bhambri and other Directors.

The team championships saw some exciting matches in the Women’s Team Event. There was a day long tough clash between GAIL and IOCL with GAIL prevailing 2 -1 after they won the deciding doubles rubber. Representing GAIL, Prerna Bhambri faced stiff resistance from Nidi Chelumala of IOCL before she won her singles match 7-5, 6-3.

In the second singles IOCL levelled up when Prarthana Thumre beat Sneha Devi Reddy of GAIL in an exciting three setter 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
In the deciding doubles rubber GAIL represented by Prerna Bhambri and Sneha Devi Reddy beat the IOCL doubles pair of Prarthana Thumre and Rushmi Chakraborty 6-2 , 6-4.

In the Men’s Team Championships, Oil India beat hosts EIL (2-0). IOCL also beat HPCL (2-0) and ONGC beat NRL by a similar margin (2-0). Defending champions GAIL received a bye into the Semi Finals.

From among the talented youngsters, young Ramkumar Ramanathan of IOCL was impressive when he blanked out Anup Toppo of HPCL 6-0, 6-0.

The Men’s Team Championship Semi Finals are scheduled from 9 am onwards tomorrow and promise some exciting matches, especially the clash between ONGC and IOCL with top ranked Indian player Yuki Bhambri from ONGC likely to play against talented Ramkumar Ramanathan of IOCL. With so many good players on court tomorrow, exciting tennis can be expected.
