Jamshedpur: Sunit Chowrasia who shot a dismal 12-over 83 but yet ended up as the winner of the second leg of the Tata Steel IGU East Zone Sub Junior Tour that concluded at the Golmuri Golf Club here on Saturday. Sunit who was leading by three shots overnight maintained the margin as he ended up with a total of 14-over 156 with Viraj Khanna emerging as the runner-up with a score of 159. Gurkirat Singh who also won the Category B title finished third overall with a final day card of 78 to finish with a two-round total of 161.
Hashan Rahman played some consistent golf to top the leaderboard in Category C with a total of 154. Devansh Chadha finished runner-up with an aggregate of 162 while Bibek Sardar was third at 163. Sandeep Yadav claimed the Category D honours with a total of 164 while Rajib Ali was second at 169. Khushboo Sinha emerged as the champion in the girls category carding 173.
Sunit who had an excellent first round was not in the same elements today. Perhaps the cushion of three shots had made him complacent. However as one realised, the playing conditions itself were tough with winds determining the direction of the ball most of the times. Yet the 16-year-old chose to attack the pins and paid the penalty as he began with an hattrick of bogeys before hitting the best patch of his round making three consecutive pars. Sunit’s round was laced with a lone birdie on the par-4 13th as he carded four more pars but erred on many holes especially the ninth where he made a triple bogey.
“It was not the kind of start I was looking at and before I realised, I had made three bogeys. However I was determined to keep the ball in play and tried to make pars, if not birdies. I succeeded on certain and failed on certain occasions but overall I think I played some good golf during the week,” said the champion. “I am playing at my home course in the next event and look forward to winning there,” said a beaming Sunit.
Meanwhile, the kids in the lower categories impressed the most with Sandeep Yadav (Category D) shooting the best round of the day when he carded a 77, although from the front tees.
