Olympian OP Jaisha hospitalised after tested positive for H1N1

Olympian OP Jaisha, who returned from Rio with fever and body ache last week, has been hospitalised after she was tested positive for H1N1, two days after another athlete Sudha Singh was found to be suffering from the same, says a report in Firstpost website.

According to the report, Sports Authority of India Regional director Shyam Sunder told PTI “Jaisha, who arrived in Bengaluru with fever and body ache, has been hospitalised at the Fortis hospital at Bannerghatta, as per the information I had received so far from SAI doctors".

Jaisha had competed in the women's marathon in Rio Olympics. “It was an ‘arduous task’ for SAI authorities to convince her to get her blood samples tested at the state-run Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD), says the report.

Meanwhile, according to a report in Bangalore Mirror, Jaisha, who had gone incommunicado after her controversial comments that no officials from the Athletics Federation of India were on hand to provide her with water or energy drinks during her race in Rio, was brought to the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases on Wednesday with cough, exhaustion and mild fever. Results of her samples proved positive for H1N1 on Thursday.

Dr Shashidhar Buggi, the director of the institute, said, "She was brought to the hospital by officials of the surveillance unit of the health and family welfare department. We did the initial check-up and did a throat swab culture and blood examination. But she did not have very high fever. We had administered anti-viral drugs (Tamiflu) even before obtaining the test results because she had all the symptoms of swine flu. We offered her a deluxe ward and asked her to get admitted so that we could continue the treatment.

A report in Indian Express quotes Buggi saying that Jaisha had complained of mild fever, body ache, joint pain and exhaustion. Jaisha, on her return from Rio, alleged that Indian officials did not provide her with water or energy drinks during the race. She collapsed at the finish line after completing the event with a timing of 2:47:19, and required medical help.
