MP Sachin Tendulkar bats for sports, proposes road map for promotion and development of sports

Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who is also a member of Rajya Sabha now, has proposed to scout for sporting talent through mobile phones, Facebook and YouTube, inviting potential sportspersons to sms/ upload/ post their credentials, and selecting the best for rounds of expert training to hone their skills, says a report in The Indian Express.

“From drawing archers from tribal areas to talented hockey players and boxers from the Northeast, Tendulkar has called for “systemic changes” to realise the dream of “sports for all” and excellence in the field. In a presentation shared with the HRD Ministry, Tendulkar has detailed his roadmap to make India “a successful multi sports nation”. He advocates a three-tiered approach, says the report.

“Tier 1 is about making sports a subject of study in history books with chapters on Indian hockey and Asian Games, while taking note of Indian sportsmen like Dhyan Chand. Tier 2 should be to develop a parallel to US sports which draws its Olympians from the university network. Tier 3 will focus on ‘high performance sport’ and ‘production of future champions’ — a target to be achieved through centres for sporting excellence that the Sports Ministry will set up,” says the report.

According to a report in The Times Of India, in his capacity as Rajya Sabha member, Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has prepared a roadmap for Indian sports, which he submitted to Union human resource development minister Kapil Sibal and sports minister Ajay Maken last month.

According to sources, the batting maestro has given a two-page summary and attached a 25-slide presentation to show the road ahead for Indian sports. In the presentation, Tendulkar essentially made four main points - how to tap into the grassroots level and nurture young talent, how to promote sports at university and college levels and make it more competitive, how to revamp infrastructure and improve the structure of excellence and how physical activities should be compulsory for every Indian.

Meanwhile a report in Deccan Herald says that if things go according to plan, cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar may soon be involved in a big way in promotion of sports in schools and higher education system.

Expressing his desire to work closely with the government to integrate sports into the education system, Tendulkar has written a letter to the HRD Ministry which has welcomed his offer. Responding positively to his initiative, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has invited him to make a presentation before the Ministry.

"We welcome Sachin Tendulkar's proposal and I have already written to him inviting him for a presentation. The Ministry does not decide on the curriculum, it's either NCERT or CBSE. After we receive the presentation, we will send it to NCERT and CBSE and see how to take it forward," Sibal said.
