Jwala Gutta hits out at AITA, feels Olympic selection row put Indian sports in bad light

Ace Indian women’s shuttler Jwala Gutta feels that the ongoing tennis fracas in the country shows Indian sports in poor light and the whole episode could have been solved much earlier.

“It was not necessary. They (AITA) could have kept it to themselves. Everybody knew that Leander and Mahesh would be playing Olympics. They could have sorted it out much earlier,” a report in The Hindu quoted Jwala.

Jwala who is the first ever Indian shuttler to qualify for two events in Olympics- mixed doubles and women’s doubles said that she was unable to understand as to why this whole thing occurred and AITA could have kept it within themselves rather than making public announcements every day According to her this row not only puts the tennis in poor light but other sports as well.

Jwala in the report also mentioned that much like the tennis players she is also against the way the sports associations tend to control the players.

“Something which I cannot digest. Something, the association decides who plays with whom. That’s something new for me. Now, if somebody comes and tells me in my association that Jwala, you cannot play with (V) Diju and Ashwini (Ponnappa). I will be furious,” Jwala added.

Meanwhile a report in Mail Today writes that Romeo Fernandes’ 88th minute goal helped India hold United Arab Emirates to a 1-1 draw in the under 22 AFC Championship group A qualifier match at the Royal Oman Police Stadium in Muscat on Thurdsday.

A report in The Hindustan Times says that HRT reserve driver Dani Clos would replace Narain Karthikeyan for the opening practice session for upcoming Formula One British Grand Prix. The Spanish driver would be getting behind the wheels for the second time after Barcelona last month. He would be on the track for first 90 minutes of the practice with Pedro de la Rosa before being replaced by Karthikeyan again over the weekends.
