Former Real Madrid coach Luxemburgo leads Gremio into top four

Rio de Janeiro: Former Real Madrid and Brazil coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo continued his impressive run with Gremio as the Porto Alegre club moved to fourth in Brazil's Serie A with a 2-0 victory over Flamengo.

On-loan defender Werley and former Wigan Athletic striker Marcelo Moreno scored either side of the break to hand Gremio a fourth win from its past five league matches at Estadio Olimpico Sunday.

Luxemburgo, who took over as Gremio coach at the beginning of the season after being sacked by Flamengo, last week vowed to lead the club to a top-four finish.

Meanwhile defending champion Corinthians recorded its first win of the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Luiz Felipe Scolari's Palmeiras.

Mazinho gave the visitors the lead after four minutes at the Pacaembu Stadium before a Romarinho double helped lift the Sao Paulo club from last to 17th on the table.

Corinthians fielded an understrength team in preparation for Wednesday's Copa Libertadores final first leg against Boca Juniors in Buenos Aires.

Former Portugal international midfielder Deco scored a penalty and played a key role in Fluminense's 4-1 victory away to Atletico Goias. The result took the Rio club to fifth on the standings. (IANS)
