Liverpool vs Manchester United: 1-1 draw takes Liverpool in Europa League quarters

football icon 2A 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford was enough for Liverpool to progress to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, as they beat the Red Devils 3-1 on aggregate.

An Anthony Martial penalty gave United hope of mounting a memorable comeback, but a superb solo effort from Philippe Coutinho saw Liverpool equalise just before the break.

The hosts produced a far better performance than they did at Anfield in the first leg, pushing forward throughout the game, but Coutinho's goal essentially killed off the tie.

United were awarded a penalty when Nathaniel Clyne who experienced a bad time from Martial the entire half and tackled the striker in the penalty box , and the Frenchman coolly sent Mignolet the wrong way to give The Old Trafford crowd a glimmer of hope .

But but but ..a special guy from a town in Brazil had to yet show his brilliance at the Theater of Dreams. Countinho grabbed Liverpool's leveller which required United to score three more goals. On the stroke of half-time, he picked the ball up on the left before leaving Varela for dead and finished the ball sublimely over De Gea's head .

The match was more or less over there itself as scoring three goals against a resilient Liverpool defence seemed to be too much for this young United side.

The match ended as a draw at 1-1 and Liverpool progressed to the quarterfinals of the Europa League on a better Aggregate (3-1) where they will face none other then Borussia Dortmund !
