Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday announced Team India’s squads for the upcoming tour of Australia, which includes three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and five Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) to be played in October and November. The Senior Men’s Selection Committee finalised a mix of experience and youth, signalling both continuity and experimentation ahead of a busy cricket calendar.
In a notable move, Shubman Gill has been appointed as captain for the ODI series, marking a major milestone in his young career. The 25-year-old opener will lead an Indian side featuring several seasoned campaigners including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom will provide experience and stability at the top and middle order. Shreyas Iyer, who returns from injury, has been named vice-captain, strengthening the leadership group.
The ODI squad also features KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel as the wicketkeeping options, giving India flexibility in the batting lineup. All-rounders Axar Patel and Washington Sundar add balance to the team with their dual abilities. Kuldeep Yadav leads the spin department, while Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, and Harshit Rana will form the pace attack.
Meanwhile, for the T20I series, Suryakumar Yadav has been retained as captain, continuing in the role he has held with confidence and flair. Shubman Gill will serve as his deputy, reflecting his growing stature across formats. The selectors have rewarded consistent IPL and domestic performers, ensuring a healthy blend of youth and experience for the high-intensity T20 contests.
Explosive left-hander Abhishek Sharma earns a well-deserved call-up after his impressive form, while Tilak Varma and Rinku Singh retain their spots, adding depth and power to India’s middle order. Nitish Kumar Reddy and Shivam Dube offer all-round options, both known for their ability to change the course of a game with bat or ball.
Behind the stumps, Jitesh Sharma and Sanju Samson will handle wicketkeeping duties. Both have shown their ability to score quick runs in the death overs, giving the team dynamic finishing options. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar will provide the spin-bowling all-rounder strength, while Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy make up a potent spin combination for Australian conditions that often demand variety and guile.
The pace attack for the T20Is will be spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, whose return to rhythm has been a major boost for India. Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana add youthful energy and left-right variation, giving the captain multiple bowling options across powerplays and death overs.
This tour will be a “strategic testing ground” ahead of next year’s major tournaments. The emphasis is on workload management and on identifying players who can handle pressure in Australian conditions — particularly with the ICC Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup on the horizon.
For players like Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Reddy, and Rinku Singh, this series represents an opportunity to cement their spots in the national setup. At the same time, veterans like Kohli and Rohit will look to fine-tune their rhythm against one of the world’s most competitive sides.
The ODIs are expected to be played in Perth, Brisbane, and Sydney, while the five T20Is will take place across Adelaide, Melbourne, Canberra, Hobart, and Sydney. The tour promises intense cricket, with both teams likely to use the series to assess combinations and tactics ahead of a packed international schedule.
With India fielding two distinct squads and young leaders at the helm, this tour marks a new phase in the team’s transition. It’s not just another bilateral series — it’s a glimpse into India’s future cricketing roadmap.
