Some nasty, some humorous: Sledging incidents in cricket

Glenn McGrathWhile cricket is widely regarded as the "Gentleman's Game", it has had its fair share of ugly spats as well, bringing down the reputation of the game. The concept of sledging has been in existence for a long time testing the temperament of players. Some of them get very nasty while the major portion of it has a tinge of humor attached to it. Here, we look at such funny moments in the game which were well received by the audiences and remembered till date.

10. Mark Waugh and James Ormond

The Ashes series is always known for its heated exchanges. While the lesser known English all rounder came out to bat, Mark sheepishly claimed "Mate, I don’t think you are fit to play for England" to which James quickly said "Well, at least I am the best player in my family".

9. Glenn McGrath and Eddo Brandes

The legendary Australian is always known for his infamous sledging incidents and this one is no different. When the Zimbabwean tailender missed a couple of deliveries, Glenn went up to him and asked "Why are you so fat" to which he replied "Cuz your wife gave me a biscuit everytime I made love to her".

8 Steve Waugh and Parthiv Patel

Coming out to bat in his last test, Steve Waugh was greeted to the crease by a young Parthiv Patel who foolishly said "C’mon, let's see a slog sweep one last time before you bow out" to which the calm and composed Australian replied "At least respect me, I made my debut when you were in your nappies".

7 Mark Waugh and Adam Parore

Mark Waugh is no mum to sledging and this time round, he took a dig at the New Zealander by saying "I saw you a couple of years back, you were useless back then and you are even worse this time round, how dumb!" to which Adam replied "I saw you with an old ugly slut at the bar last time round and now she is your wife, how dumb!".

6 Viv Richards and Merv Hughes

The legendary West Indian skipper smashed Merv for four consecutive boundaries in an over to which Merv furiously ran down the pitch and farted loudly, saying "now hit this for a boundary" which left Sir Viv dumbstruck.

5 Steve Waugh and Curtly Ambrose

The usually calm and composed Steve lost his nerve after failing to score of Ambrose by going down to him and saying "What the f**k are you looking at?" to which he replied "Don't curse me", which left Steve searching for words.

4 Sachin Tendulkar and Abdul Qadir

When the Indian maestro smashed two sixes of an over against Mushtaq Ahmed, his mentor Abdul Qadir walked up to Sachin and said "Why are you hitting of this kid, hit my deliveries if you can" to which Sachin obliged and whacked four sixes and a four of Qadir's next over.

3 Ricky Ponting and Shaun Pollock

When the Australian captain had missed two deliveries, Shaun Pollock went upto him and said "It is red, round and weighs about five ounce". The next delivery, Ponting smashed in for a four and ran up to Pollock and said "You know how it looks, now go find it".

2 Shoaib Akhtar and Virender Sehwag

When Akhtar asked Sehwag to hook his deliveries, Sehwag said "You dad is in the non-striker's end, bowl him, he'll hook them and show you". And so it happened, the dad was none other than Sachin who hooked him in the very next over for a six.

1 Dennis Lillee and Javed Miandad

The funniest sledging incident, however, is reserved for the spat between Lillee and Miandad when Lilee childishly kicked Miandad just brushing his pants which made Javed furious and he went on to swing the bat at him. Although, it sounds quite serious, watching the video would certainly tickle a few feathers.
