2016 a year to remember for Virat Kohli as he broke many records across all formats

Virat Kohli double centuryIt was a year to remember for the Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli who had a terrific run of form in the bygone year, making a mockery of the oppositions that came his way.

It is to be noted that the Delhi boy broke in excess of 40 cricketing records in 2016 across all formats.

His rich vein of form meant that he went on to amass close to 650 runs in T20 Internationals which is the highest in a calendar year. He also went on to become the first Indian to score three double hundreds in a single year and went on to become the only player to average in excess of 50 across all formats of the game.

Comparison between Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli is understandable, but can Kohli beat the ‘God of Cricket’s’ record

In addition to his batting prowess, he has been in sublime form as a captain with his brilliant rotation policy not allowing the batsman to settle down, and with penchant for quick runs and aggressive stroke play, he ensures that there is always a result possible in every test match with some bold decisions being taken forward.

His aggression has paid dividends and deeply benefited the Indian Test team as they continue their merry run decimating the opposition and sitting pretty at the top of the rankings.

Although, a lot of individual brilliance has made this possible, much of the success has to be attributed to Kohli's daring captaincy which has resulted in India's longest unbeaten streak at 18 games.

To go with all the success that has loomed over the team, he was also adjudged the captain of the ODI team of the year which was the icing on the cake for the magnitude of success he has enjoyed on the international arena. He also managed to edge past Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan to hog the top spot in the recently published Forbes Celebrity 100 for the year 2016.

In addition to all these honours and accolades that has been flowing in from all fronts, some of the other noteworthy records that he broke in the year include starting off the IPL season as the highest paid player, became the fastest to score 25 centuries accomplishing the feat in as many as 162 innings. By virtue of his fantastic outing in T20Is, he went on to scale the top by clinching the top rank for T20I batsmen and continues to hold it ever since with a rating of 820 points. He was featured in the inaugural Forbes 30 under 30 under the Sports and Entertainment category and was named the second-most marketable athlete in the world. The T20 World Cup held earlier this year also saw a run feast and he was accorded the Player of the Tournament Award for his exploits with the bat.

Due to his on field heroics, his brand value shot up multi-fold and his off-field commitments were also seen soaring sky high with record breaking deals and endorsements.

The cherry on top came with a thumping 4-0 victory over England in the Test Series at home which rounded off what has otherwise been an entertaining year all year for the Delhi batsman.

One would only hope that 2017 is as good a year as compared to this year.
