IPL spot fixing: SC observes CSK should be suspended

srinivasan-26New Delhi: In a setback for N Srinivasan, the honourable Supreme Court, on Thursday, observed that the elections for the Cricket Board on December 17 should be held without the BCCI supremo taking part in it this time.
“Let a new set of people come, who will be able to solve all these problems on betting and match fixing in a fair manner. Those involved in these episodes as per the Mudgal Commission report, should stand aside,” the court said.
The court also observed that the IPL team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) should be suspended without further inquiry. Asking N Srinivasan to give details about who controls CSK, owned by India Cements, the court said, “Furnish details of share holding of India Cements and composition of its Board members.”

“Our crusade against Corruption is moving in the right direction,” said Aditya Verma, the petitioner in the case and also the secretary of the Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB). “The corruption of Srinivasan has reached its nadir. It should come to an end,” Verma said.

The CAB secretary said: “It has now been proved beyond doubt in the court that Srinivasan did everything to protect his son-in-law Gurunath Maiyappan, who was accused of betting in the IPL 6. This has to end. Otherwise the great game would be destroyed.”

The Supreme Court on August 25 had said that N Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan's role in IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal seemed like “insider trading” and agreed to hear a plea for making public the names of cricketers, who were mentioned in the Justice Mudgal Committee report.

The Supreme Court said: “Your (Srinivasan) duty as a president is to keep the show (IPL) running and to keep it clean. What is your duty as a team owner? To win the tournament. The conflict between duty and interest is obvious here.”

According to IPL rules, if a team official is found indulging in corrupt activities like betting and match-fixing, the franchise can be terminated. The probe panel headed by former judge Mukul Mudgal has said in its report that Meiyappan was a team owner and indulged in betting and sharing team information. BCCI judges have urged the Supreme Court to let the Board appoint a commission and punish the guilty.

The hearing will resume on Monday at 2pm
