Youth Chess: Diptayan and Karthikeyan lead

Brazil: Diptayan Ghosh in Under-14 and Karthikeyan Murali in Under-12 kept the Indian hopes alive for the yellow metal finish in their respective categories after registering contrasting victories in the seventh round of the ongoing World Youth Chess Championship here at Caldas Novas, Brazil on Thursday.

 

In the seventh round encounters, ninth seed Diptayan shocked second seed International Master Antipov Mikhail of Russia while Karthikeyan got better off Chiku Ratte Oliver Kenta of Canada. These crucial victories enabled them to maintain their joint lead at top of point table with six points in their categories.  In the penultimate round tomorrow, Karthikeyan takes on team mate and top seed Arvindh Chithambaram.

In other important results in the day, Debashis Das in Under-18 category, Rathanvel in Under-10 and Ram Aravind in Under-8 kept the chances intact for a podium finish by beating Fide Master Espinoza Palomino Willyam of Peru, Rakesh Kumar Jena and Metpally Jason of USA respectively in the seventh round battle while Under-16 Girls category Nandhidhaa P V suffered defeat against Salazar Aura Cristina of Colombia and Monnisha G K had the same fate against Goyachkina Aleksandra of Russia in Under-14 Girls event.
