Women boxing: Pinky moves into next round

Bhopal: Arafura Games gold medallist Pinky Jangra of Haryana opened with a bang in the fly weight division as she hammered Anjali Machahary of Assam into submission in the 12th Senior Women’s National Boxing Championship, which got underway in Bhopal on Tuesday.  The 21-year-old beat Machahary comprehensively (26:9) to make her way into the next round.


In the light fly weight division, Youth World and National Champion Sarjubala Devi of Manipur continued her form from the recently concluded Youth Nationals as she pulverized her opponent Madhusmita Sahoo of Orissa. The 18-year-old champion was leading 15:1 in the first round when the referee decided to stop the fight. It was resounding victory for Manipur girl who is shaping up to be a great athlete. 

In the same weight category Sanasri Brahma of Assam, a quarter-finalist at the Youth World Championships earlier this year, got over her youth nationals loss with a victory over Suman Kumari of Assam. (16:7)

The bantam weight category saw Pooja of Rajasthan overpower Sunita Ekka of Jharkhand 16:6 on points and in the light weight division Neetu Chahal of Haryana had no problems getting past Adhilakshmi Saragada of Andhra Pradesh.
