Double bonanza for India in badminton as Sameer Verma, PV Sindhu reach final of Hong Kong Open

PVS SindhuHong Kong: It was a double bonanza for India in Hong Kong as Sameer Verma stunned World No. 3 Jan O Jorgensen of Denmark to reach his maiden Super Series final while Olympic silver medallist P V Sindhu made it to her second successive summit clash in women's singles in Kowloon on Saturday.

The 22-year-old Sameer got the better of 21-19 24-22 win over Denmark's Jorgensen and will now will fight for the title against local favourite Ng Ka Long Angus.

Meanwhile, continuing her winning streak, PV Sindhu defeated Cheung Ngan Yi by 21-14, 21-16 to reach the final of Hong Kong Open Super Series, here on Saturday. This will be Sindhu’s second consecutive Open Series final.

The first game was closely contested among the two shuttlers. But Sindhu got an edge over Cheung through her accurate smashes, which helped her to win her first game by 21-14 in just 18 minutes. Cheung looked so competitive in the second match to equalize the score 10-10. Sindhu’s height proved to be a direct advantage on the short heighted Cheung. Cheung reflex action was tough to answer. After a long match of 46 minute, Sindhu managed to pull out another by 21-16 to reach the final of Hong Kong Open.

This is Rio Olympics Silver medalist Sindhu's second consecutive Super Series final in which she will meet Taiwan's Tai Tzu Ying who defeated World number one and defending Hong Kong Open champion Carolina Marin 21-17, 14-21, 21-16.
