Maharaja Ranjit Singh Hockey Tournament: Indian Navy beat Namdhari XI in a closely-contested match

Namdhari Navy ranjeetNew Delhi: Indian Navy got the better of Namdhari XI in a closely-contested match of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Hockey Tournament being played at Shivaji Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday.

Though it were the Namdharis who were attacking from the word go and had maximum possession of the ball initially, the Indian Navy managed to take the lead through Surender  in the 23rd minute when he converted a penalty corner to give Indian Navy the advantage.

However, the goal did not deter the Namdharis from attacking. But the Navymen somehow managed to keep their slate clean as they were ahead by 1-0 till the breather.

The second half began with both the teams started off with a new zeal. They resorted to attacking hockey. Indian Navy seemed more confident and were willing to take the risks and that paid off. Another goal by Surinder in 62nd minute through a penalty corner for Navy put them in driver’s seat.

After a lead of 2-0, Navy shifted their gear to defensive mode and were keeping the ball in their possession for long. Despite their strong defence, Namdharis managed their first goal in the 69th minute of the game. The goal was scored by Tarandeep Singh.

Finally, Indian Navy won by 2-1.

In other matches played on Sunday, Air India played 1-1 draw with Punjab National Bank, while Army XI beat Indian Air Force 2-0.
