Rio Olympics: Indian athletes fed only ‘peanuts’ after being forced to skip their dinner at Independence Day function

Nothing seems to be going right for the country's Olympic contingent currently in Rio de Janeiro as a group of athletes attending an Independence Day function at the Indian Embassy were only fed "peanuts" after being forced to skip their dinner, says a report in The Times Of India.

The event was organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and was attended by the two hockey teams who were already out of the competition. The players had cancelled their dinner at the Games Village expecting a full-course meal.

A member of the hockey team was fuming, adds the report. "It was all about peanuts. We expected a dinner at least but what they served was beer and some soft drinks, and peanuts," a member of the hockey team fumed, saying "We had cancelled our dinner at the Games Village and came all the way. It's really disappointing," he said as they were taken in two buses to the venue.

Meanwhile, a report in the Hindustan Times website said the reception on India’s Independence day arranged by the ministry of youth affairs and sports, and the embassy in Brazil left Indian Rio 2016 athletes disappointed and unhappy. Reason? The athletes expected good food to be served at the late afternoon reception, or at least decent Indian snacks since most of them were missing home food.

What they did get was tea, coffee, juice and peanuts. There were also some cookies and chocolates, but the fare left the thirty athletes in a foul mood.

“Did they call us all the way from the Athletes Village for this?” asked one athlete angrily, declining to be named. The trip to the reception and back took the athletes over four hours.
