Indian Olympic Association meeting to be held today

The Indian Olympic Association’s (IOA) special general meeting is expected to be a stormy affair, says a report in The DNA. Some of the members have vowed to raise objections to the possible presence of scam-tainted officials.

Jagdish Tytler who is IOA vice-president before the meeting declared that like in the last meeting, he would object to the presence of Lalit Bhanot. Along with Suresh Kalmadi and VK Verma.

Some members have expressed happiness over Kalmadi’s decision to not seek another term. “We expect Bhanot and other tainted IOA members to take a break till they are proved innocent by the court of law. Hope they are listening to our voices,” said an IOA official.

Meanwhile, The Times of India reports that Suresh Kalmadi has already made it clear that he will not be in running for a fifth term and said he wants to concentrate on his political career. He was quoted in the report saying, "I have served Indian sports for the last four terms as president of the IOA to the best of my abilities and have now decided to make way for a new generation of sports leaders. I would now like to focus on my constituency -- Pune and on my family."

V.K. Malhotra, IOA Acting President is also scheduled to nominate the Returning Officer for the elections to be held on November 25. Notice for the elections had been issued on Oct. 5, says a report in The Hindu.

Meanwhile, hearing in the writ petition filed by the IOA against the National Sports Code in the Delhi High Court was put off to Nov. 9 on Tuesday. The IOA had challenged the code that incorporates the guidelines on tenure of office-bearers.
